Career Counseling is an exploratory process intended to support students with deeper career-related questions, decision-making, and connecting self-knowledge to career possibilities.
Looking to better understand services available through the Graham Office but not sure what questions to ask? We’d be happy to provide an overview of the work we do. This is the ideal option for students required to engage with Graham for a course assignment.
Gatton B&E Students (including pre-majors, business minors, business certificate candidates) and Alumni seeking our Career Counseling appointment type often have broader questions and concerns that may take more time, discussion, and tools to address. Some common discussions brought into Career Counseling include:
- Choosing a major/s and career path
- Deciding between multiple job offers
- Pivoting into a new area of study or field
- Determining alternative post-grad plans:
- Grad/Professional School, Military, Leap Year, Volunteer Work
Have a quick career-related question, need another set of eyes on your professional documentation, or want to practice sharing your elevator pitch? This is your go-to! Stop in during drop-in hours for a little help. No appointment needed.
Graham’s Career Counseling process takes place in three to four, 1-hour sessions supporting students with three primary objectives:
- Learn Who You Are,
- Plan Where You’ll Go
- Get Where You’re Going.
In session one, we’ll focus on reviewing your intake form, discuss why you are seeking Career Counseling, and together establish some goals for our time together. The sessions that follow will look different depending on your needs but ultimately, it’s our desire to send you off with increased confidence and clarity in your career journey.
You may be asked to complete some assessment tools to outline your top values, interests, personality traits, and skills/strengths. You may also be tasked with homework such as independent research to expand your career knowledge and/or exercises to increase your career exposure. We will discuss any assignments in further detail during your first session.
All services are offered to undergraduate students and alumni (within 1 year of graduation) at no additional cost. This is however a premium service. Students can engage in Career Counseling once each Spring, Fall, and Summer semester. Appointments will be facilitated in-person, in the Graham Office of Career Management. This is the standard appointment modality and preferred method for this appointment type. Virtual appointments will only be offered in special circumstances.
Employers form impressions of your resume within seconds. We’ll show you how to get it right in terms of format (how it looks) and content (what it says)!
Career Counseling is a specialized service of the Graham Office of Career Management, requiring commitment of time and intentionality from you, the student. Please carefully read what Graham Career Counselors expect from you as a student, along with a few things you can leave off your “to do” list.
As the student seeking career counseling you are committing to the following:
- Participation: Career Counseling with the Graham Office takes place over a series of three 1-hour appointments, with an additional fourth appointment option if needed. Your appointments will be scheduled after you are approved to participate. You are expected to attend all scheduled appointments and notify your counselor within 24 hours if you are unable to.
- Be on Time: You are responsible for being on time for your appointments. If you are 15 minutes or more late, and have not notified your assigned counselor, your appointment will be considered a no-show. Students who no-show are not guaranteed to continue with Career Counseling and will be rescheduled at the discretion of the counselor. This could mean being placed on a waiting list.
- No-Show Policy: A student who has a no show/no call will be asked to wait a designated amount of time before a new request for Career Counseling will be considered. During this time, other Graham Office appointment types will remain available as normal.
You are NOT required to:
- Know Your Major: You don’t need to know your career path or have a plan for life in general. However, participation in Career Counseling is a personal decision. An advisor or faculty member may refer you, but it is always your choice to move forward. Please do not opt in this appointment type for class assignments.
- Have a Resume: No professional documentation needed. In fact, resume writing/review is a separate service of the Graham Office and will not necessarily be included in the Career Counseling process.
- Know Where to Start: You don’t even need to know what questions to ask. However, if you have specific career-related questions, we do want to hear them!
What’s your major? It’s a key question for college students. We’ll help you find the answer that’s right for you based on your unique values, interests, personality traits, and strengths (VIPS). Let’s take some extra time to discuss how your VIPS provide a road map to potential career paths.
Whether it’s across town or across the country, employers are looking for talent! Using tools like Handshake, LinkedIn, and more, we’ll show you how to identify opportunities and apply with confidence.
The interview is your moment to prove that you’re THE candidate to hire. We’ll show you how to shine! We’ll take extra time to provide intense preparation or conduct a full-scale Mock Interview.
Not sure where to start with your career journey or have a unique question that doesn’t fit typical appointment types? This flexible session is designed to address your specific needs, whether you’re exploring career paths, setting goals, or tackling unique challenges. Let’s work together to create a plan that aligns with your aspirations!
